Chapter
Two: New Direction
A
few days went by without much interest. Other than the new woman
coming to come pester him, InuYasha went about his life without much
concern. However, the constant pestering had become something more. A
break from the menial day stuck behind a counter alone. Every time
she would come down, he’d perk a little, only to find he enjoyed her
presence in the room. Albeit she only visited for a few minutes at a
time, those minutes always left him in a slightly better mood. After
the fifth day of her coming and asking for his side of the story, he
almost gave in, before a gnawing fear bit back his words and he sat
behind the desk with a frown.
“No.
I won’t talk about it.” he said, looking away.
“Why?
Why do you deny so vehemently? What do you have to lose in telling
me?”
“Everything.”
InuYasha frowned at her, “That day I lost nearly everything– my
partner. My job– my pride.” he snarled as his fists balled up,
“I’m not gonna let this ruin what little I’ve been able to keep.”
The
woman sighed as she shifted her weight on her feet, “But you could
possibly regain everything– or are you just afraid everyone will
find out you really did kill Kikyo?”
“I
didn’t kill her!” he roared as he stood up, “I would never have
harmed her!”
“Then
help me find out who really did– by helping me fill in the small
details no one else knows.”
InuYasha
paused, going over his options before frowning, “No– now leave me
alone.”
She
frowned leaning against the counter, “I won’t leave you alone–
you’re the only witness who saw what happened!”
“I
didn’t see anything! Now get out of here before I force you to!” he
snarled, his anger growing by the second.
Standing
straight she turned and promptly left the room with a slam of the
door. Immediately he regretted his decision and slumped into his
chair.
The
next day, InuYasha had not even had time to get to his desk when he
was stopped by several others from his old department.
“Looks
like this will be your end, finally, Hanyou. The case you escaped
five years ago has been reopened. Can’t escape this time.” one of
the group laughed, a burly demon with horns and red eyes.
InuYasha’s
ears pinned back as he sighed. Wanting nothing more than to pick a
fight with them, he bit his tongue, “Excuse me– some of us have
actual work to do.” he said moving past them only to be stopped by
another body in front of him.
“You’re
coming with me, actually.” Kagome smirked, “Don’t worry, I got
permission from the big brass to have you not be at your usual
station today.”
Glaring,
he sighed heavily, “I already told you yesterday, I’m not talking
about it.”
“Well
too bad. You aren’t going anywhere till I get my answers. And if I
have to use force, I will.” she grinned at his confused expression.
He
frowned, “Force?”
She
smirked as an older woman walked up behind him and forced a rosary
necklace around his neck. Immediately he felt a jolt go through him,
as his body felt like it was full of lead.
“H-Hey!
These are for criminals! I haven’t done anything!”
“Help
us, and they will come off– refuse and those stay on. Your choice.”
the old woman said, coming to stand by Kagome. as InuYasha tried to
remove the rosary.
He
growled as his ears pinned back and his hands fell to his sides in
irritation, “K-Kaede– this isn’t funny.” he frowned before
sighing, “Fine– you want info– I’ll give it. But not here.”
“Awesome.
Follow me.” Kagome smiled as she walked to her desk and grabbed a
file.
InuYasha
did not miss the snickers come from the large room as he followed
Kagome into an interrogation room and sat, his chin in his palm.
Kagome
entered with him, before sitting across from him, gently opening the
file folder.
“Was
the necklace really necessary?” he griped, lifting it as far as he
could with a finger.
“You
won’t cooperate otherwise. I would think you’d want your name cleared
for good.” Kagome sighed softly.
“Good
that’ll do. It won’t get me my job back, nor what little respect I
had managed to earn.”
Kagome
frowned at him, “So– you were the partner to CSI Kikyo, were you
not?”
“Yes–
since she joined the force.” he answered, crossing his arms.
“What
really happened that day– what did you see?”
InuYasha
paused as he looked at her with his golden eyes before looking away,
“To explain that– I’d have to explain why we were there in the
first place. Kikyo had gotten a tip for this narcotics case we were
working on. It led us straight to that abandoned complex. We were hot
on the trail when things suddenly ended up in a stand off. One
minute, I’m with her, watching her back like always, next thing– I
see her lying on the ground as if an animal had attacked her. Then
I’m being cuffed and sent away in a squad car with everyone saying it
was my fault.”
“An
animal? Aren’t– you part dog?” Kagome asked, writing down
everything he was saying.
A
groan answered her question, “I’m half dog demon– yes. But I
didn’t do it. I had no reason to attack her. Plus the guys we were
chasing, got away. For all I know, one of them killed her, and framed
me with the death. I didn’t see her die though.”
“You
were standing right there though– how did you not see it?”
His
ears pinned back as he leaned back in his seat, “I– can’t explain
it. It’s like I lost a piece of time in that exact moment. When I had
conscious thought again, she was on the ground, and her blood was all
over me.”
Kagome
frowned as she put her pen down, “Hence why the others think you
killed her.”
He
nodded, glancing off to the side.
“They
weren’t able to prove you did it then. So– why does everyone still
label you the killer?”
“Keh–
like I would know. Probably just to poke fun at the Hanyou who lost
his partner and job within a day.”
She
frowned as she stood and walked over to him, earning her a
distrustful look from him as she touched the rosary, “InuYasha– I
want to help you. I want to prove you weren’t the one who killed
Kikyo. But I can’t do that if you don’t help me.”
“Didn’t
I just help now? What else do you want from me?” he frowned, edging
slightly away from her.
She
dug into her jacket pocket and pulled out an investigator’s badge and
placed it on the table, “Help me find the guys who more than likely
really killed Kikyo. You’re the only one alive who still remembers
them, more than likely could track them down with that nose of yours.
Do this, and I can see about keeping you enlisted as an investigator.
What do you say?” Kagome smiled as the hanyou’s eyes stared at the
badge before him.
Slowly
he took the badge and looked at it, “B-Better than nothing, I
suppose. But I highly doubt the big wigs will let me leave the
basement.”
“Don’t
worry about them. I’ve had it cleared with Kaede who cleared it on
higher. This is basically a second chance for you.”
He
gripped it as he looked at her, “Fine. I’ll help. Now take this
rosary off.”
“Not
yet. Those are merely a safety net. If you keep those on, the big
wigs agreed you could be an investigator again.”
“What?
But you said if I helped–”
“Which
you are. Haven’t really started yet, have you?” she beamed, “Come
on. We’ve got work to do.”
He
sat there stunned before growling softly but quickly pocketed the
badge and followed her out the door.
